Bajaj Pulsar CS 400 – What We Know So Far

With the launch just a few months away, Bajaj Auto has moved into the final testing phase for the Pulsar CS 400 and will be the Pune based bike maker’s flagship offering. The model will be making it to the showrooms later this year as the most powerful Pulsar and will be opening up a new chapter for Bajaj Auto as the manufacturer gears up to retail its first full-fledged performance bike. While the company has kept the details related to the new model under wraps, here is what we know so far about the newest offering from Bajaj.

1. The Bajaj Pulsar CS (Cruiser Sport) 400 retains several styling elements from the concept shown at the 2014 Auto Expo and is one of the more good looking Pulsars to be produced by the manufacturer. The bike gets a well-designed front cowl with LED lights, sharply designed headlight cluster and LED indicators mimicking the concept and the overall styling is muscular boasting of a striking presence, which has been much appreciated.

2. The Pulsar CS400 is heavily inspired by the Ducati Diavel and in a way will be introducing an all-new ‘Cruiser Sport’ segment in the sub 2 lakh price bracket. Bajaj has already categorized its 200cc offerings as the Race Sport (RS), Naked Sport (NS) and Adventure Sport (AS), offering bikes that appeal to different customers. With the CS 400, the company also treads a new terrain in the premium motorcycle space.

3. In terms of features, the CS400 will be the first Pulsar to get an all-digital instrument console and will also feature an auxiliary digital display on the fuel tank, again inspired by the Diavel. The bike will get wavy alloy wheels, a stubby silencer, LED tail lights and wide split seats, instead of the elongated single seat seen on the concept.

4. The production spec Bajaj Pulsar CS400 will feature conventional telescopic forks instead of USD forks seen on the concept in a bid to keep costs under check, while the rear will use a monoshock suspension setup. Braking performance will come from twin disc brakes at the front and rear.

5. Talking about the powertrain, the Pulsar CS 400 will be using the 373.2cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that powers the KTM 390 Duke and RC 390 models. Tweaking it for the Bajaj family, the motor is expected to accommodate triple spark technology and will produce under 40bhp of power and around 30Nm of torque. A 6-speed gearbox will be sending power to the rear wheel.

6. The CS 400 will also become the first offering from Bajaj to feature dual-channel ABS. ABS rings have been spotted on both wheels on several test mules, while certain test bikes spied previously have missed the feature altogether. Hence, it would be safe to say that the safety feature will be available as optional. It is also likely that Bajaj will offer two different set of tyres on the CS 400 with the base variant featuring MRFs.

7. The CS 400 will be the fastest Pulsar to ever go on sale and will be competing with the Mahindra Mojo, Honda CBR250R and the likes in the segment. Being cheaper and less powerful compared to the KTM Duke 390, the Indian manufacturer won’t directly compete with its Austrian sibling in the segment.

8. The Pulsar CS 400 will be sharing several components with the RS 200 to achieve higher economies of scale. The company is targeting touring enthusiasts with the CS 400 as a powerful cruiser.

9. A price tag of around 1.70 lakh (ex-showroom) is expected, whereas Bajaj has confirmed that the CS 400 will be launched in the third quarter of 2016.
